“Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve”. –Napoleon Hill
In my journey at Roark Gyms, one of the greatest lessons I have learnt is the power of the mind. Psychological before physical is the driving force behind the exponential growth that I, and so many others, have experienced over the past year. It is a place that has become a fundamental part of my life, a place that has taught me to believe in myself and my ability, a place that has allowed me to reach the goals that I deemed unattainable.
But let me start from the beginning.
In April 2013 I joined Roark Gyms, with the sole intention of joining for 6 months and 6 months only. I was more enthused by running at the time, but given the rainy winters here in Cape Town, I needed something to occupy me during the times when the torrential downpours prevented me from exploring the promenade yet again.
One year down the line, I am still a proud member of Roark Women.
Something I learnt quickly is that the more you put in, the more you stand to gain from each session. They are designed to ensure that no matter your level of fitness, they never get any easier. In fact, I think they get harder, because the extent to which you push yourself increases, you start to realise that you CAN do better, that you will get stronger and that you are capable of more than you thought you were. It is a place where you will be challenged, not only by yourself, but by those around you that are like-minded. I have felt inspired by the girls at Roark Women; they embody both passion and strength.
What I have failed to mention thus far however, is that at the very core of this fine establishment, you will find the team that have taken a concept, and made the whole greater than the sum of its parts. What I love most about this gym, is that the trainers are there for you. They are there to guide you and to teach you, to help you know and understand your limits, and when to push them. We are essentially products of their hard work, and our success is ultimately their success. In the year that I have been there, I have been pushed to the best of my ability in every possible instance. And I have come out smiling almost every time. The reason I say almost, is because there are times when you will fail to reach your goals. These times are merely a test of your strength of mind and although it is extremely frustrating to fail, you will find that your disappointment is what fuels the desire to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and try again.
“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” – Viktor E. Frankl
The choice that we make in that space is what dictates the end result and it is in that space that you have the opportunity to discover the immense power of your mind.
Roark Gyms has given me that opportunity.
